James Uithoven

James Uithoven, 76, of Akron; died Friday, April 20, 2001, at a Sioux City Hospital.

Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, with Reverend Allen Bidne officiating. Visitation was Monday, April 23, 2001, from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral Home. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Arrangements were under the direction of Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

James was born August 24, 1924, in Valley Springs, South Dakota, the son of John and Winnie (Van Maanen) raised in South Dakota. He graduated from Corsica High School in 1942.

James married Gertrude Willemsen on August 11, 1950, in Stickney, South Dakota. James also graduated from Springfield, South Dakota in 1967 with a B. S. Degree.

James and Gertrude moved to Stickney, South Dakota. The coupld had also lived in Fairfax, Geddes, Armour, Ravina, and Irene, all in South Dakota, before moving to Akron.

James had been employed as a teacher in rural schools in Geddes for 3 years, Fairfax for 1 year, Irene for 8 years, and Akron for 7 years. He then retired in 1986.

During this time, he was also employed with Load King for 6 years. The couple had been in Akron for 33 years. Mr. Uithoven was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron.

James is survived by his wife Gertrude; two sons, Gerald of Omaha and Bradley of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; two daughters, Barbara Schiefen, of Maple Grove, Minnesota and Gloria Melton and her husband, Patrick, of Bellevue, Nebraska; one sister, Carrie Klaus and her husband, Charles, of Marion; and 8 grandchildren.

James was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jacob and Myron; one sister, Marie Vliestra; and one grandchild, Michelle.

Lunch was served at the church following the burial in Riverside Cemetery.

The organist was Marietta Nielsen, who played "In the Garden", "Rock of Ages", "Amazing Grace:, and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" for the congregation.

Pallbearers were Mike Rohlfs, Tim Melton, Chris Melton, Arlo Rohlfs, Mark Uithoven, and Mike Uithoven.

Honorary Pallbearers were Vernon Jurgensen, Ray Andreson, George Hitzemann, Marvin Hitzemann, Don Neunaber, NOrman Klaus, and Dick Oetken.
