Melvin Baack, 80 of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away at his home on Friday, November 13, 2020 after a two and a half year courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A of Le Mars with Pastor Chris Meier officiating. Masks and social distancing are required. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Garden in rural Le Mars.

Visitation with family present will begin at 4:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all on Monday, November 16, 2020 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home of Le Mars. Mask and social distancing are required.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to: St John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Hospice of Siouxland, or June E. Nylen Cancer Center.

Melvin Arnold Baack was born on April 19, 1940 to William and Anna (Pedersen) Baack in Bronson, Iowa. They moved to Le Mars where he attended Le Mars Community High School. Their family later moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa where Melvin graduated from high school in 1958. Melvin then joined the United States Air Force on November 6, 1958. He was stationed in France for a short time and honorably discharged on May 25, 1961. Melvin was united in marriage to Dianne Brunken on August 31, 1962 and they made their home in Le Mars. Melvin owned and operated Mel’s Plumbing and Heating in Le Mars for 37 years before he retired.

Melvin was a long-time member at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars and was also a member of the Eagle’s. He enjoyed playing cards, dominos, puzzles, sudoku, and reading. When his children were young, they really enjoyed going camping and fishing. Later in life, he loved to travel with Dianne, their children, and grandchildren; they took several trips to Florida, Mexico, and Hawaii. Melvin also loved watching sports and enjoyed watching the Dodgers, Cubs, Vikings, and Iowa State.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dianne; children: Carolyn (Joe) Strub of Le Mars, Brad (Kim) Baack of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Laura (Sean) Donohue of Le Mars; grandchildren: Kailey (Domingo) Marin, Kelly Prince, Chris (Victoria) Strub, Paxton Strub, CJ Strub, Zach Baack, Ryan Baack, Erin (Brandon) Franco, and Nick (Caitie) Donohue; great grandchildren: Ivy Donohue, Emery Donohue, Mason Franco, Kashton Strub, and Gavin Marin; siblings: Ed (JoEllen) Baack of Portland, Oregon, Gary (Sharon) Baack of Phoenix, Arizona, and Roland Baack of Detroit, Michigan; sister in law, Donna (Don) Kniffen; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna Baack; parents in law, Clarence and Irene Brunken; and sister in law, Joyce Baack.
