NECK IS BROKEN IN AUTO SMASH

CHET BARTON, WELL KNOWN LINEMAN, INSTANTLY KILLED IN MOTOR ACCIDENT

Chet Barton, a resident of Le Mars for the past twenty-seven years and an expert telephone lineman, was instantly killed shortly after midnight Wednesday when his neck was broken in an automobile accident. Barton, according to reports, was returning from a trip to Sioux City in company with Clay Butler, of the Butler Oil company. Butler was driving the car and Barton was asleep in the rear seat. Crossing the big bridge north of Merrill the car unaccountably swerved against the bridge rails and was wrecked. Butler escaped with cuts and bruises. He was confined to bed yesterday suffering from his injuries and nervous shock. Barton was still breathing when extricated from the wrecked car but was dead before arriving at the Weidenfeller garage in Merrill where he was being conveyed. He sustained wounds in his head in addition to the fracture.
Was Native of Iowa

Guy Leslie Barton was born at Newton, Iowa, May 5, 1879, where he spent his boyhood. He came to Le Mars twenty-seven years ago when the Plymouth Telephone company embarked in business and was a valued employee of the company for many years. Later he was employed at other occupations and with the Iowa Public Service company.

He was united in marriage in 1904 with Miss Kate Ries, of this city, who with a son survives him. He also leaves a brother, Arthur Barton, living in California, and a sister, Mrs. Thos. Brokaw, of Springfield, 111. His sister had notified him this week that she was coming to visit him next week. The funeral will be held from the home, 114 Fourth Avenue SW., Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
