Douglas Osterbuhr, 72, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Reverend Chris Meier from St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Heeren-McHale-Wilkens American Legion Post 724 of Brunsville, Iowa. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Douglas Gene Osterbuhr was born January 5, 1948 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Dick and Helen (Phelan) Osterbuhr. He attended Union Consolidated School in rural Plymouth County, Iowa and high school in Remsen. He graduated from Remsen-Union High School in 1967.

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1968. He served his country during the Vietnam War while stationed in West Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1970. Following the service, he returned to Le Mars.

He was united in marriage to Nancy Calkins on August 29, 1970 at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. They made their home on an acreage outside of Le Mars. Doug worked as a mechanic in Le Mars. In 1977, he went to work for Kent Feeds in Sioux City. In 1994, he and Nancy purchased the Sheldon Motel in Sheldon, Iowa. They owned and operated the motel until 1999. After living in Sheldon for 5 years, they returned to Le Mars. Doug went to work for the Walmart Tire Lube Center in Le Mars until his retirement.

Doug was a member of the Heeren-McHale-Wilkens American Legion Post 724 in Brunsville, Iowa. He was a man of strong faith and a hard-working man, whether it was working on cars, tending to flower and vegetable gardens, or helping those in need. He loved the outdoors where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and riding his motorcycle. In his younger years, he enjoyed racing his stockcar and participating in demolition derbies. He also enjoyed woodworking and will be remembered for his many stories that he told. Most of all, he loved the time spent with family, especially grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Le Mars; 5 children: Jason Osterbuhr of Sioux City, IA, Jody (Christine) Osterbuhr of Merrill, IA, Cory Osterbuhr of Sheldon, IA, April (Josh) Meyer of Hospers, IA, and Clint Osterbuhr (Shannon Rogers) of Le Mars; 8 grandchildren and several step grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Ashley Osterbuhr of Orange City, IA, and Byron (Joan) Osterbuhr of Le Mars; 3 sisters: Linda (Ken) King of California, Sharon (Cletus) Sitzmann of Kingsley, IA, and Terry (Bruce) Moore of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews and his faithful companion Bo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Helen Osterbuhr; his parents in law: Vero and Julia Calkins and step father-in-law Carl Buccola; his granddaughter: Alyssa Osterbuhr; and two brothers in law: Duane Calkins and Wayne Weatherford.
