David Tone was born in Le Mars, Iowa, to Dorothy and Alfred Tone on June 9, 1949, and was one of nine children. Dave came from a large family, but he defined family beyond a gene pool. The country church in which he was raised was family, as were members of the community and his classmates.
Dave moved to Bozeman, Montana, in the early 70's and his family grew. Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Gallatin County was established and shortly thereafter, Dave was named as director. His leadership and fundraising talents which began in high school were put to use as the program grew. As more kids were matched, more funds were needed. Dave rose to the challenge because every child should have the opportunity to reach his/her potential and thrive.
Wherever Dave lived, he was always advocating for kids. In Helena, he continued with Big Brother-Big Sisters. In Whitefish, he was employed as a real estate broker and property manager, but his vocation was foster care. His family of foster sons grew to be 30+. Most in his care returned to their families and others grew to adulthood in his home. And their families became part of Dave's ever-growing family.
Dave was a big man with a big heart and a big smile. He liked to laugh and make others laugh. He liked dirt biking, mountain biking, scuba diving and plowing snow! He liked to drive cars, trucks and buses. He liked to fly and earned his pilot's license. But most of all he liked to help families especially if he could do it anonymously. He was motivated by his love of God and faith in Jesus Christ and was guided by the Holy Spirit.
Dave returned to the Gallatin Valley for the latter years of his life. He had some health issues that limited his abilities and made him a bit incorrigible but he always kept his sense of humor. His pride and joy was family and Dave's family was huge!
Dave went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 19, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters (Elizabeth Stanton, Martha Tone) and a brother (James Tone). He is survived by his son (Dan Rose), granddaughters (Alysha, Ashley, Kalee, Kortni) three brothers (Dan, Paul, Tim), two sisters (Mary Feldner, Leah), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and by the huge family he cherished.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dave's name (or anonymously) can be made to Big Brothers-Big Sisters or any organization that advocates for children and families.
A Celebration of Dave's life will be held at Springhill Presbyterian Church in Bozeman on Nov. 11, 2017 at 1 p.m. Interment will take place in Iowa later in the spring. In the meantime, give away a smile, encourage someone, call a friend or quietly meet a need
