Vera L. Thatcher

Vera L. Thatcher, 99, died December 11, 1996, at Grand Island, Nebraska, after a brief illness.

Services were held Saturday, December 14, 1996, at First Church of Christ, Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. Elmer Hodge, Justin May and Tim Snyder officiating. Music was the congregation singing “How Great Thou Art” and “Because He Lives,” accompanied by Mika Rosenbaum on the organ. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Akron, Iowa, under direction of Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron.

Casketbearers were Harold Moffatt, Lyle McInnis, Hayden McInnis, Evertt Harkness, Carl Westergard and Darcy Fletcher.

Mrs. Thatcher was born November 3, 1897, in Akron, the daughter of Elizabeth and Lewis Adams. She attended Akron schools until the 11th grade, when she quite school to care for her mother who was ill. She lived I the Akron vicinity most of her life.

She was united in marriage December 20, 1916, with John N. Thatcher. They were blessed with eight children. In the spring of 1941, the family moved to a farm southeast of Akron where they lived until 1966. Because of her husband’s failing health, they moved back to Akron.

She was an active member of the West Side Church of Christ when it was in existence and more recently became a member of the First Church of Christ.

In 1989, she went to live with her daughter and her husband in Grand Island, Nebraska. Because of illness, she entered a nursing home there in January, 1993. She was a kind and loving mother and a very hard worker during her lifetime.

Survivors include one son, John Thatcher, Jr., of Rockford, Illinois; four daughters, Winfred L. Foster of Orlando, Florida, Ruth E. Kosin of Little Rock, Arkansas, Lis R. Kosin of Rockfor, Illinois, and Julie M. Epperly of Grand Island, Nebraska; 24 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by her husband, John; two sons, Raymond M. and Stanley L.; one daughter, Florence McMann; one grandson, David Thatcher; one great-grandson, Philip Leon; four brother; and one sister.
