Harry Henry Bonnema Jr., 80, of Le Mars died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mr. Bonnema was born Dec. 10, 1917, near Akron, Iowa, the son of Harry and Dora (Mohlmann) Bonnema. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and attended country schools.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to Iowa.
He married Dollie Wynia on Jan. 23, 1946, in Le Mars.
He was employed as a maintainer operator with Plymouth County for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., Wasmer American Legion Post 241 and the Pioneer Machinery Club, where he served as president for 30 years. He was one of the original organizers of the Plymouth County Museum and enjoyed collecting tractors and antiques.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Janice Marie and Gary Gauwain of Newbury Park, Calif.; two grandsons, Robert and Kevin Strawder; two brothers and their wives, Marlyn and Joan of Orange City, Iowa, and Gerald and Lou of Bremerton, Wash.; and a sister and her husband, Evelyn and Hilbert Ludwigs of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Orville.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Rassel, Fred and Gene Haring, Dan Bohlken, Garret Havalaar, Gordon Schoellerman and Alvin Lipke.

Harry's first name was from his father, Harry Bonnema, Sr. His middle name , Ihnke, was from his maternal grandfather, Ihnke Mohlmann. His middle name, Henry, was from his paternal grandfather, Henry Bonnema, Sr.
