Charles Roland Fletcher
Charles Roland Fletcher, 72, Des Plaines, Ill., died Nov. 2, 1988, at the Lutheran General hospital in Des Plaines.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Ochler Funeral Chapel in Des Plaines. Rev. Russell Carlson officiated. Interment was in Memory Gardens cemetery.
Mr. Fletcher was born March 16, 1916 in Union County, S.D. to Lawrence and Nora Jane Nall Fletcher of Akron. He graduated from the Akron high school and also attended college at Springfield and Brookings, S.D.
He volunteered to serve his one year of service prior to World War II, during this time World War II started, and he served his country all through the war. He was never permitted to return home on furlough. He served in Africa, Sicily, Italy, southern France and Germany. During the war he was hospitalized for four days due to exhaustion. He was an engineer in charge of water purification, and attained the rank of captain. He also served as a courier for a while during the war.
After the war ended Roland worked for his oldest brother Edgar's engineering firm. Rolling Meadows, Ill., is one of their most notable projects, and today is a city with a population well over 20,000.
Mr. Fletcher married Margaret Mackey, March 28, 1946.
Survivors include his wife Margaret; two sons, Dr. Kenneth Fletcher of Massachusetts and Daniel of Des Plaines; two daughters, Patricia M. Beranek of Texas and Connie R. Piepenburg of Springfield, Ill.; five grandchildren; two brothers, Elmo and Darcy Fletcher of Akron; and a sister, Mrs. Curtis (Lora) Johnson, of Flandreau, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Edgar, Quigley, Ray and Floyd, and; and three sisters, Muriel, Maude and Lorene.
