SUMMONS COMES TO WELL KNOWN RESIDENT HERE
Ben Smizer Farmed in This Vicinity More Then Forty Years
Akron lost a loved and respected citizen when Ben Smizer passed away at his home early Thursday morning, November 16, 1944. He had been ill a few weeks before but seemed to be improving, so his death was a shock to family and friends.
Benjamin Franklin Smizer was born in Lewis county, Missouri, November 25, 1866, where he grew to manhood. He was a member of the Baptist church at Durham, Missouri. He was married to Edna Fletcher, of Durham, September 20, 1900. Soon after their marriage they moved to Iowa, and he had been a successful farmer in this vicinity until he retired about a year ago and moved to Akron.
He is survived by his widow, Edna; two sons, Percy, who resides with his mother, and Charles, who lives west of Akron. He also leaves two greatly loved little grandsons, Larry Smizer and Jerry Nygard; two brothers, Mike of Durham, Missouri, and several nephews and nieces who will miss 'Uncle Ben," with his cheery smile and word of greeting.
A daughter, Mrs. Viola Nygard, preceded her father in death June 26, 1940.
Mr. Smizer was a loving husband and father and a good neighbor, and will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the First Baptist church of Akron, with Rev. J. Olen Kennell, the pastor officiating. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
Relatives who came from a distance were: Two nieces Mrs. Pearl Minch of Palmyra, Missouri; and Mrs. Wm. Hadfield of Maywood, Missouri; a brother-in-law Art Fletcher of Hot Springs, S.D. and cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Blythe of Lennox, S.D.
