Mildred A. Ahlers, 77, of Le Mars, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, after suffering an apparent heart attack at her home.
The former Mildred Anne Nussbaum, the daughter of Ted and Julia (Curtis) Nussbaum, was born Nov. 8, 1927 in Le Mars. She grew up in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Central High School. She was then employed for several years with the telephone office in Le Mars.

On June 20, 1949, she married Henry A. Ahlers at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Hank and Mildred lived their entire married lives in Le Mars.

Mildred was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was an active member of the church Guild. She was also a member of The Christian Mother's Society, a 50-year member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and a member of T.T.T. and St. Catherine's Study Club.

Family was most important to Mildred. She dedicated her life to her six children, her grandchildren and her husband. Mildred was known to her many friends for her selfless concern and care for others. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and playing bridge with her friends.

Survivors include her husband Henry A. "Hank" Ahlers of Le Mars; six children and their families: Ted Ahlers and Barbara Ormond of Washington, D.C., and their children, Elizabeth and Nathaniel; Anne and Stuart Ramsey of Houston, Texas, and their children, Paul, Kirk, and Courtney; Ellen and Doug Wells of Le Mars, and their children, Kathryn, Joe, and Sarah; Margie and Matt Gambee of Portland, Ore., and their children, Michael, Erin, Kevin, and Molly; Matt and Gayle Ahlers of Le Mars, and their children, Mike, Carolyn, Emily, Jeff, and Matthew; and Katie and Matt Havey of Le Mars, and their children, Eric, Ryan, and Thomas. She is also survived by three sisters and their husbands: Jean and Bill Zemanek of Westfield, Laurita and Paul McCoy of Yucaipa, Calif., and Lorretta and Lou White of West Des Moines; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Ahlers of Le Mars, and Sister Ruth Agnes Ahlers, O.S.F., of Dubuque; a brother-in-law and his wife, Robert and Cy Ahlers of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. William McCarthy presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be at St. Joseph's Catholic Church after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Christian Mothers Society, a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., and a rosary by the Catholic Daughters of America at 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday at the church for one hour before the Mass.
