William J. "Bill" Clarey, 77, of Akron, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.

William J. "Bill" Clarey was born March 9, 1928, on a farm southeast of Akron, the son of Edward Clifford and Iva (Belt) Clarey. He attended country school near Akron. He was united in marriage to Iona "Nonie" Trometer on Nov. 3, 1948, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. His wife died April 6, 2001, in Akron.

Bill was a truck driver all of his life until retiring from Midwest Flyash and the Laborers Local 427.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. He had been a resident of the Akron Care Center, where he was active in the Akron Bell Choir and Wheel Chair Square Dancing. He loved to watch the Chicago Cubs and spending time with his family.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, William D. and Cynthia of Greybull, Wyo., Terry and Lynette of Akron, Randy and Lisa of Akron, and Andy and Kathy of Rock Valley; two daughters, Linda Degen and her husband, Todd of Ireton and Beki Clarey of Sioux City; two brothers, Clifford Clarey and his wife, Gladys and Robert Clarey and his wife, Lois, all of Akron; two sisters, Phyllis Ludwigs and her husband, Gerd, and Lavonne Henry and her husband, Estell, all of Akron; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iona; three brothers, Tom, James and Clarence Clarey; and two sisters, Lois Irene Greenleaf and Mary McIlvenna.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron with Msgr. Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron, with the family present after 6 p.m. There will be a Scriptural wake at 7 p.m. followed by a parish rosary, all at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary casketbearers will be his granddaughters.

Memorials may be made in Bill's name to the Akron Care Center Activities Fund.
