Note: According to one of her son's obituaries her maiden name is Edden but I believe it is actually Eden according to family trees. Family trees also spell her first name Gebke.
AGED PIONEER IS CALLED BY DEATH
Gevke Margretha Harms Dies At Advanced Age Of 94 Years
Gevke Margretha Harms, 94, years, one month and three days of age, one of the real pioneers of this community, died at the home of her son, Fred Harms Tuesday. Old age and infirmities were the cause of her death.
The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock from the home of her son and 2 o’clock at the Grant township Lutheran church, Rev. Meyer officiating. Burial will be made in the Grant Lutheran cemetery, Lukens funeral directors in charge.
Mrs. Harms was born in Germany on November 15, 1834, where she received her education and grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Jurgen Johnson (Jurgen Johnson Harms) on April 24, 1857. Her husband preceded her in death by 15 years.
In 1884 they came to the United States, settling in Grant township. Deceased had made her home here ever since. To this union seven children were born, 1 child dying in infancy. The remaining children, who mourn her loss and who live in Grant township with the exception of Fred Harms are:
Gesche Margaret Frerichs, Fred Harms, Gerhard Johnson Harms, Edo A. Harms, John J. Harms, Siebelt Harms. Thirty-nine grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Harms was one of the sturdy pioneers who braved the hardships of early frontier life, coming to this community in its infancy. She was a good mother and wife and her many friends will greatly miss her. The public extends its sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
