Robert “Bob” Bliss
Robert “Bob” Bliss, 88, of Amarillo died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Murray Gossett officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Robert “Bob” was born June 15, 1926, in Akron, Iowa, the first of four children to Roy and Winnie Bliss. Upon graduation from high school at age 16, he joined the Merchant Marine Academy.
He graduated from Iowa State University in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He joined the Army and served as a dairy and meat inspector in Le Mars, Iowa, where he met his wife, Skeet Hamilton, and married on Nov. 16, 1952, in Merrill, Iowa. They moved to Erie, Ill., in January 1953, where Bob managed the animal division at Wilder Farms.
Bob and Skeet with four boys, moved to Muleshoe in 1962, where he managed King Feedyard for five years. The family moved to Tulia, where Bob built and managed Swisher County Cattle Co., one of the largest commercial cattle feeding operations in the country. He spent several years as manager of commercial cattle feeding for Friona Industries and later with Cargill. Bob was well respected and considered a pioneer in the development of cattle feeding in the Texas Panhandle. He was president of Texas Cattle Feeder’s Association, board member of National Cattlemen’s Association, Cattle Fax and National Meat Board.
He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Erie, Ill., since 1956, Lion’s Club and Shriners. Bob was a kind and generous man who loved and cherished his wife for 62 years. He was a strong mentor and deeply admired by his four sons.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Skeet of Amarillo; four sons, Scott of Corpus Christi, Todd and wife Mary of Tampa, Fla., Gregg and wife Libby of
Amarillo and Timm of Dallas; nine grandchildren, Brandon, Maegan, Holly, Robert, Rachel, Tasha, Todd, Braden and Zackery; two great-grandchildren; a brother, John Bliss; and two sisters, Bernice Boetger and Norma Jean Brink.The family suggest memorials be to a favorite charity.
