LeMars Sentinel: P. A. Anderson, a pioneer settler of Plymouth County, died at the city hospital in LeMars on Sunday, October 19, 1919. Death was due to cancer of the stomach.
Mr. Anderson was a native of Sweden, where he was born seventy-five years ago on September 11, 1844. When a young man he came to America. He homesteaded land in Preston township in 1870, where he lived for a number of years and later bought land in Westfield township, where he lived for many years. He is survived by a son, G. A. Anderson, of Salem, Ore., who served in the war.
Mr. Anderson was well known in the west part of the county and among the pioneer settlers.
The Funeral services were held yesterday at the Methodist church, Rev. Walter Torbet officiating.
Mr. Anderson is survived by three daughters, who are, Mrs. Olive Beardsley, of Salem, Ore.; Esther Anderson, at the Oregon Agricultural college at Corvallis, and Hazel Anderson, of Morningside, Sioux City. His son, Gus Anderson, who was recently discharged from the army, is now instructor at Oregon university in Salem.
Mr. Anderson came to America when a young man and engaged in railroad work and was a contractor and construction worker on the Lake Erie road and later on the Chicago and St. Paul road. While engaged in railroad work, he homesteaded in Plymouth county, taking up land at the same time as his brother, Frank O. Anderson, deceased; John Erickson and Hans Erickson, John McGillivrey and John Beely. After living on the homestead a few years, he and his brother went to Missouri and lived near Pierce City. Returning to Plymouth county, Mr. Anderson bought a farm in Westfield township, where he lived until his death.
He was brought to the hospital a short time ago, suffering from a cancer of the stomach, and on Wednesday of last week underwent an operation.
