Joseph Schroeder Services Wednesday

Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s church here Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock for Joseph Schroeder one of the community’s prominent retired farmers and a lifelong resident here, who died in St. Joseph’s Mercy hospital, Sioux City, early Sunday.

Mr. Schroeder had been in failing health for several years and had previously been hospitalized. His last period of hospitalization extended about one week.

Born on a farm near Remsen April 7, 1887, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Schroeder who came here among the early settlers. He married Clara Hansen at Balltown, Iowa, January 27, 1914, and the couple farmed here many years before retiring to town six years ago.

Mr. Schroeder from one of the community’s prominent and highly respected families, was a man of exemplary habits, a strictly family man and loyal to his many friends who were grieved over his death. His devotion to his family was among his many outstanding characteristics, and hundreds joined the bereaved family in sorrow and expressions of condolences and esteem at wake and the funeral services.

Surviving are the widow, Clara; one daughter, Mrs. Wilmer (Clara) Rupp of Cherokee, three sons, Silverius and Irvin of Remsen and Gilbert of Le Mars, 15 grandchildren and one brother, J. P Schroeder, also of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.

Wake was held, with the rosary, at the Fisch funeral home Monday, evening and again Tuesday afternoon and evening. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Pall bearers were Clarence Schroeder, Ray Schroeder, John Feller, Ben Freking, Peter De Blauw and Ray Flynn.
