Henry Joachim Toedt was born at Burg, Fehmarn Island, Germany, July 24, 1852, and died March 22, 1919. Until his fifteenth year, he made his home with his parents at Burg and went to school. After that he was a sailor for the German Merchant Marine for 5 years, his last two years being with the Hamburg-American line. At the age of twenty, he came to this country and started farming near Davenport, Iowa. On March 4, 1881, he was married to Augusta Katherine Kay and settled on a farm near Avoca, Iowa. In 1885 they moved to Remsen, Iowa, where they followed farming for twelve years and then moved to Echo, Minn., where they resided on a farm for 8 years and then moved to Kingsley, Iowa, where they have since resided.

To their union were born five children, one passing away before the father. They are Rosa, now Mrs. A. Riemenschneider, Mrs. Alvin Christopherson of Kingsley, Charlotte, who still at home, and Carl, who is with the colors, now at a hospital at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Besides the widow who is left to mourn his loss, he has five brothers, Louis and Carl, of Wood Lake, Minn., Ernest, of Chicago, John of Correctionville. and Adolph of Montana, four sisters, Agnes, of Pierson, Charlotte, of Grand Junction, Colorado, Frieda, of Los Angeles, Cal, and Emma, who still resides in Germany, and 7 grandchildren.

Deceased had been sick for eighteen days with dysentery Hopes had been held out for him till the last and his death was a shock to the entire community. Everything was done to restore him to better health but his father had a better home waiting for him, he passed to the Great Beyond on Saturday, March 22 at 7:30 a. m.

He was a loving father and a kind husband and a faithful member of the Lutheran church He was a straight forward citizen and was made up of the highest of standards of morale. He reared his family in a truly Christian way and gave his children the advantages of a good education.

The funeral was conducted Tuesday by Rev. Carsten, from the Congregational church and the remains were interred in the Kingsley Cemetery.
