DEATH COMES TO HAROLD GOSSARD LAST THURSDAY

Rites Are Held Sunday For Esteemed Akron Business Man

The final summons came last week to another prominent and esteemed Akron citizen and business man when, Harold E. Gossard passed away at his home here on Thursday evening, December 16, 1948, after an extended illness of diabetes and complications, at the age of 34 years, 4 months and 15 days. Several weeks ago he underwent treatment at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minn., but only temporary relief was obtained, and the end came as a merciful relief from the intense suffering endured during the final days of his life.

Harold Everett Gossard, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Gossard, was born August 5, 1914, at Kasson, Minnesota. He attended the Kasson public schools and was graduated from high school in 1932, after which he attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, Minn.

On June 3, 1939, he was united in marriage with Genevieve Mae Wohlford, of Pipestone, Minnesota. To this union were born two children-a son and daughter-Douglas Reed and Mary Lynn.

From the years 1935 until 1943, Mr. Gossard was employed by the Hull Savings Bank, of Hull, Iowa, after which time he was accepted by the Iowa State Banking Department as State Bank Examiner. In April, 1944, he and his family moved to Akron, where he was employed at the Akron Savings Bank as cashier and insurance agent until the time of his death.

Mr. Gossard had held membership in Sapphire lodge, No 427, A. F. & A. M. for several years.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his death, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Gossard, of Kasson, Minn.; two brothers, Robert, of Alton, Iowa, and Carlyle, of West Concord, Minn., and two sisters, Mrs. Wallace Aird, of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Arthur Boerger, of Chicago, Ill.

The relatives have the deep sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement in the loss of a kind and devoted husband, father, son and brother.

Mr. Gossard was a man of rather quiet and reserved nature, yet he was affable and courteous and readily made friends of all with whom he came in contact. His extended business experience made it possible for him to lend valuable assistance in various civic activities to which he willingly gave his time. Along with his participation in the affairs of Akron Commercial Club, he served as its president one year, and also was on the temporary board of the new Akron Hospital which laid the groundwork for the financing of the project. The loss of this good citizen to the community is genuinely regretted by everyone. The community tenders its heartfelt condolence to the devoted wife, the children, parents, brothers and sisters in the bereavement attending their grievous loss.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Orville N. Nelson, the pastor. The singing was by a male quartet, comprised of J. J. Behmer, Karl Silkebakken, Harry B. Nelson and J. R. Shoulberg, with Mrs. Harry B. Nelson as accompanist. The pallbearers were Paul Stoel, Chester Campbell, Donald Ross, Robert Tucker, Melvin Lias and Arvel Lake.

Officers of Sapphire lodge, No. 427, of Hull, Iowa, had charge of the Masonic burial service in Riverside cemetery, assisted by members of Freedom lodge, No. 434, of Akron, with V. G. Adams delivering the impressive Masonic oration at the graveside.

Besides a host of friends from Hull, Iowa, the following relatives from a distance attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Gossard, the parents, of Kasson, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Aird, of St. Paul, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Boerger, of Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gossard, of Alton, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Carlyle Gossard, of Dodge Center, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Sparks. of Faribault, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Gossett, of Sioux City, Iowa; Fred Gossard, of Mankato, Minn.; Mr. H. E. Wohlford and family, of Jasper, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Spyron Chaney, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Chaney, Mr. and Mrs. John Harinsen, of Pipestone, Minn.; Frank Wedell, of Marysville, Mo; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Folgate, Mr. and Mrs. C. Fryer, of Orangeville, Ill.
