Pioneer Mother Laid To Rest

Resident Of This Vicinity For Thirty-nine Years

Mrs. Sarah Ann Stauffer was the seventh of a family of ten children born to Jacob and Ann (Braucher) Paulus. She was born on December 28, 1845, in Stark Co., Ohio. At her passing she was seven months in her passing she was seven months in her 86th year. She was the last surviving member of her parents’ household.

She was reared in the place of her birth and married on November 25, 1862, a month before her 17th birthday, to John Stauffer. This marriage occurred on Thanksgiving Day and her companion died on Thanksgiving Day 60 years and five days later.

Life may be divided roughly into two halves for Mr. and Mrs. Stauffer. In the first half they moved frequently and had many homes, then thirty-nine years ago they came to this vicinity and thirty years since moved into the home at the edge of Kingsley.

Mrs. Stauffer was the mother of nine children, seven of whom survive her, Silas and Isaiah Stauffer of Kingsley, Iowa; Ira Stauffr, Whiting, In.; Mrs. J. W. Jones, San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Mackay, Kingsley; Mrs. A. M. Murphy, Onawa, Iowa, and Hulda Stauffer, of Kingsley, Millie (Mrs. Bert) Davis of Pierson, Iowa) died in 1912.

About 12 years ago the deceased took to her bed and while at times she was able to take a few steps, the greater portion of this time she has been confined to her bed.

Mrs. Stauffer was a devout woman. Her Christian life, so far as her children know, dated back to early life. The children remember how she took them on foot three or four miles on Sunday afternoon to Sunday school. She loved the Bible and through the years until infirmity seized upon her it was her daily solace and inspiration.

Some twenty years ago she became interested in the International Bible Students movement and devoured its literature. She thought, read and talked much about the resurrection.

Wednesday morning, July 28th, Mrs. Stauffer presumable suffered a stroke, and at 10:40 she slipped out of the life quietly as befitted her life.

She was fortunate that through the years of infirmity so many of her children were near enough that they could see her frequently and that through the twelve years she could have the loving and devoted care of a daughter and son.

And so in her ripe old age, this loving mother, this dev out woman, this lover God, waiting in calmness came at last into the fulfillment of the promises and the desire of her heart.

Funeral services were conducted at the family homed by Rev. John B. Walker Saturday afternoon, Aug. 1st, 1931. Her body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Kingsley cemetery.
