FRED J. HILLRICHS KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT FRIDAY
Last Rites Are Held Monday for Portland Township Farmer
Fred J. Hillrichs, 61, well-known farmer residing about eight miles northeast of here met death in a two-car auto accident last Friday afternoon, June 12, when his car met nearly head-on with another auto at the crest of a hill on a narrow graveled county road about six miles northeast of Le Mars. Mrs. Hillrichs and son Kenneth, 17, in the auto with her husband, were injured and were hospitalized for treatment.
Mrs. Hillrichs suffered a fractured jaw. Occupants of the other car were M. and Mrs. Earl Lubben, of rural LeMars. Mrs. Lubben was treated in a hospital for bruises, facial and head cuts, and Mr. Lubben was treated for shock.
Fred J. Hillrichs, son of Henry and Mena Hillrichs, was born October 17, 1902, he received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in St. John Evangelical Lutheran church in Preston township. At the age of 15, on March 24, 1918, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St. John Evangelical Lutheran faith in St. John Evangelical Lutheran church, where he held membership until his death.
He was united in marriage with Alma Meinen on December 12, 1928, in Preston township. To this union were born 2 daughters: Marlys, who died in infancy and Carol, and 3 sons, Marlin, Richard and Kenneth. After his marriage he engaged in farming in the Akron vicinity and the last 31 years on his farm in Portland township.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant daughter, Marlys and by three brothers, John, Reinhard and Edwin Hillrichs.
Survivors include the widow; three sons, Marlin of Sioux City, and Richard and Kenneth, bother at home; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Clarey of Merrill, Iowa; three brothers, Henry of Craig, Iowa; and Ben and Harry, both of Akron; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Barinsky, Mrs. Emma Andresen and Mrs. Mina Peters, all of Akron, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in St. John Lutheran church, Preston township, Rev. C. G. Guetzlaff officiating. Vocal solos were sung by Kenneth Grosenheider, with Mrs. William VanBuskirk as organist. Casket bearers were Gray Hillrichs, Robert Hillrichs, Lowell Barnisky, Reinhold Witt, Darrell Peters and Darwin Tapper. Burial was in the church cemetery.
