Matthew Kale, a widely known pioneer resident of LeMars, died at six o'clock Wednesday morning. Mr. Kale had never regained former, strength since an attack of influenza a couple of years ago, and It was noticeable that he was rapidly failing, but he kept up and around and had not recently been confined to his bed.

Mat. Kale was for nearly forty years engaged in the restaurant and confectionery business in LeMars and had a wide circle of acquaintances and friends among the early settlers as well as the present generation. He was born in Dahl, Welts county, Luxembourg, June 14, 1850. He came to the United States In 1871, settling first in New York state and later In Waterloo. In 1874 he came to LeMars which place has since been his home. He was married November 17, 1876, to Margaret Simon, who survives him. Two, sons are. also living, Joe, of Sheldon, and Sylvester, of LeMars. Fred, died in 1912 .and Charlie, the fourth son was drowned in 1908. He also survived by one brother and four sisters, George Kale of Merrill, Mrs. Margaret Kress of Waterloo, Mrs. Anna Wagner of Cherokee, Mrs. Mary Anderson of Merrill. All the surviving relatives are expected to be present at the funeral at St. Joseph’s church at 9 0clock this morning conducted by Mgr. Pape, after which the body will be laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.

Mr. Kale was a genial man with a kindly greeting for everyone hard-working, thrifty and a good citizen. For several years he had been the janitor of the First National Bank and was always on the go with a cheerful word for all.
