DEATH SUMMONS MRS. ANNA SQUIRES SUNDAY EVENING

Esteemed Pioneer Woman Had Resident in Vicinity Nearly 70 Years

This community learned with sorrow of the sudden death of Mrs. Anna Squires, a resident of Sioux Valley township, Union county, S. D., Sunday evening, February 23, 1936, of apoplexy, at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 29 days. Mrs. Squires was stricken while visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Andrew Bredall, northwest of town.

Rose Anna Hoyt was born at Wilton, Connecticut, March 24, 1861, and moved west with her family in May 1867, by railway to the then terminus at Boone, Iowa, thence by ox-team and covered wagon to Dakota Territory in Union county, three miles northwest of what is now Akron, Iowa, where they experienced all the hardships and privations of the early pioneer settlers of this region.

In 1884 she was united in marriage with Thurston Squires, and they journeyed together through life until 1928, when Mr. Squires preceded her in death.

Mrs. Squires was converted during her young womanhood and united with the Methodist church at Mount Hope, near her home, and continued her membership at that place until February 26, 1899, when she, with her husband, T. C. Squires, transferred their membership to the Methodist church in Akron, where it remained.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mrs. C. O. Carlson, of Elk Point, S. D., and Mrs. Andrew Bredall, of Akron, Iowa; one son, Kyle Squires, of Alcester, S. D.; one brother, John C. Hoyt, of Akron, besides nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was kind and devoted wife, mother and sister, a helpful and sympathetic neighbor, and highly esteemed by all who knew her.

Funeral services were to have been held this (Thursday) afternoon in the Akron M. E. church, but it has been necessary to postpone to rites until the snow-blockaded roads can again be opened. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery.
