DEATH COMES TO PIONEER SETTLER OF UNION COUNTY

Rites Are Held Here Thursday Afternoon For John Hoyt

John Hoyt a resident of Union county, S. D., for over seventy years, passed away suddenly at Elk Point, S. D., on Monday, May 3, 1943, at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 9 days.

John Hoyt was born at Wilton, Connecticut, June 24, 1864 [correct birth year is 1865.) At the age of three years, with his parents, Andrew and Ruth Hoyt, he came to Boone, Iowa, by railroad, then by ox-team and covered wagon to Sioux Valley township, Union county, S. D. (then Dakota Territory), where they experienced all the hardships and privations of early pioneer life. Thus, with his death, there passes another life with the days of early settlement of this section.

On July 18, 1910, Mr. Hoyt was married to Alice Phelps. He engaged in farming all his life. For several years he served as assessor of Sioux Valley township. A man of sterling character, strict integrity, industrious and of genial nature, John Hoyt was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His immediate family have all preceded him in death, but there survive three nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services were held Thursday of last week, at 2:00 p.m., in the First Baptist church, of Akron, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. Olen Kennell. Hymns were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Homer E. Jacoby, with Mrs. H. Shoulerg at the organ. Acting as pallbearers were: Lee Stoutanburg, Ed Willer, Henry Smith, Wm. Ericson, Morris Vanberg and Glenn Wakeman. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
