Donna Caskey Martin, 84, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Friday, September 21, 2018 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa.
Services will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Rexwinkel-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. Pastor Suzi Larson will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Rexwinkel-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. The family will be present after 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel-Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Donna Mae Willer was born May 22, 1934 on the family farm in Westfield Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Bessie (Raish) Willer. She attended Breezy Hill Country School and later high school in Westfield. She graduated from Westfield Consolidated High School in 1952.
She was united in marriage to Darrel Caskey on June 5, 1952 in Luverne, Minnesota. After their marriage, she accompanied him to Fort Meade, Maryland, where Darrel was stationed while serving in the United States Army. Following his discharge, they returned to Akron, Iowa.
They were blessed with three children: Steven, Douglas, and Penny.
They started farming in 1956 in rural Plymouth County, Iowa. In 1972, they bought the Knotty Keg Tavern in Westfield. They stayed very busy with farming and running the Knotty Keg, but they found time to enjoy traveling. They closed the Knotty Keg in 1990 due to Darrel’s health. In 1991, she went to work at Coilcraft in Hawarden, Iowa until her retirement. Darrel passed away October 14, 1991. In 1993, Donna moved from the farm into Akron.
Donna married Glen Martin on April 19, 1997 in Avoca, Iowa. They made their home in Akron. Glen passed away on June 6, 2009.
Donna was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. She was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. She enjoyed attending Akron-Westfield High School athletic events, especially Westerner softball games. She enjoyed taking many bus trips and trying her luck at the casino. She also enjoyed keeping up with political happenings in Iowa and nationally.
Survivors include a son: Steve (Sharon) Caskey of Sioux City, IA; a daughter: Penny Caskey (Steve Haire) of Akron, IA; two step children: Glenda (Kenny) Edie of Robinson, KS, and Brenda (Harry) Lewis of Hiawatha, KS; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; her sister in law: Bernice Hughes of Colorado; numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends: Bonnie Pracht and Wendell Shearer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Bessie Willer; her husbands: Darrel Caskey and Glen Martin; her son and his wife: Douglas and Sandra Caskey; and her siblings: Helen (John) Dirks, Stella (Gerhardt) Claassen, Vera (Bernard) McMahon, Betty Jean (Jay) Hamman, Belva (Marvin) Watters, and Dwain Willer.
