Ex-Mayor of Akron Dies in Maryland

AKRON, Iowa – A former Akron mayor, Dr. C.R. “Chet” Mason, 64 died Nov. 21 at Montgomery General Hospital in Maryland after becoming ill while attending a national meeting of dentists in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Mason was chairman of the Plymouth County Conservation Commission and a member of the Akron Board of Education.

He was born Aug. 25, 1910, in Carnes and attended Alton public schools. He began his dentistry practice here shortly after being graduated from the University of Iowa dental school

Dr. Mason married Naomi Thorson April 27, 1934. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Hoschler American Legion Post 186, Freedom Lodge 434 and the Wesley Methodist Church.

Survivors include the widow; two daughter, Mrs. H.G. (Sue Ann) Wilms of Burtonsville, Md., and Mrs. Burt (Marcia) Benna; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services for Dr. Mason will be at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 24 in the Wesley Methodist Church Akron.
