Arlene Schulz, 93 of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2018 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. all at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Arlene was born March 21, 1925 at Craig, Iowa to Nelson and Clara (Eggebrecht) Hutton. She married Howard Dirks on November 7, 1942. Howard had partnered with Lawrence VanWyhe to open a mechanics shop at Craig, but at the start of WWII, they closed their shop and both enlisted. Arlene traveled with Howard until he was stationed overseas. Their daughter, Dona Lee, was born on July 31, 1943, and Howard died near Jarny, France on September 8, 1944. To use Arlene’s words, “I was married at the age of 17, had a child at the age of 18, and was a widow at the age of 19”.

Arlene married Dale Schulz on October 15, 1946 at the home of Howard’s parents near Ireton, Iowa. They moved to Oklahoma closer to Dale’s parents, where their daughter, LaRae, was born. Returning to Iowa, they settled in Alton where Arlene worked for Hatz Meat Market, The Hatchery, and Dr. Becker as a dental assistant. In 1978 they moved to Le Mars, where Arlene worked on the line at Harker’s.

She enjoyed crochet, cards and dominoes. But she especially enjoyed working on her cross-word puzzles in the morning over her second cup of coffee.

When Pastor Meyer approached Arlene and Dale about starting a mission church at Alton, both were eager to help. They were charter members of Faith Lutheran Church at Orange City.

Those left to cherish her memory include one daughter, LaRae (Randall) Toel; a granddaughter, Carmen (Aaron) McNaughton; and three great grandchildren: Lillian, Holly, and Chase, all of Le Mars; two sisters: Coralie VandeMheen of Apache Junction, Arizona and Roberta Williams of Burwell, Nebraska; four sisters-in-law: Cece Hutton of Sioux City, Iowa, Carol Hutton of Craig, Iowa , Joyce Hutton of Windsor, Colorado, and Della (Brad) Busch of Longmont, Colorado; and one brother-in-law, Carlyle (Ihlo) Dirks of Hawarden, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; a daughter, Dona Lee; four brothers: Gene, Brother, Red and Smoke Hutton; one sister, Barbara Eye; two brothers-in-law; and 5 sisters-in-law.
