Mrs. Stephen Eason Early Day ResidentMrs. Stephen Eason, 81, of Alton, well known in Sioux and Plymouth counties, died at her home in Alton, May 21.
Susan Pool was born in Grootegast, Holland, on January 2, 1862. She came to the United States with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephanus Pool, in the year 1868. The family settled first at Pella, and moved to a Sioux county prairie homestead in 1872. Mr. Pool's first sod hut, erected for his family in 1871, was consumed by a prairie fire, and he had to rebuild the cabin before his family could be moved from Pella to the homestead three miles south and a mile west of Orange City, where Susan grew to womanhood.
She was married to Stephen Eason in 1822 (error 1882). Eleven children were born to them, Mrs. Clarence Jackson, who died in 1930; Stephen, who passed on in 1912; George of Alton; Oscar of Orange City; Dr. John of Sanborn; Ernest of San Diego, Calif; Mrs. Bart (sic--Bert) Van Zyl, of Chicago; Mrs. John Koppenol of Pine Ridge, Ky., Dr. Alvin of Algona; Mrs. Harry DeJong, of Orange City; and Fred of Alton. Also surviving are 34 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mr. Eason preceded her in death on September 1, 1935.
Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock in charge of Rev. Ongma of Trinity Reformed church, Orange City, who also conducted services at the Presbyterian church later. Pallbearers were five of her six sons and her grandson, George Stephen Eason.
At the home, music was furnished by the Seney men's choir, accompanied by Mrs. Fred Eason. Rev. Bart (sic--Bert) Van Zyl of Chicago, Mrs. Eason's son-in-law, conducted services in Nassau township cemetery.
