Seney Pioneer Taken By Death
Mrs. Susan Haviland Came Here As Bride In Seventies

Mrs. Susan Haviland, of Seney, well known resident of Plymouth county, died at the Sacred Heart hospital, in this city, Wednesday morning, at the age of 85 years. Mrs. Haviland had been in poor health for a number of years. Three weeks ago she was the victim of an accident, when she fell down in her home and fractured a hip bone. Her age precluded recovery. Mrs. Haviland was born in London, England, Juanuary 19, 1849. Her maiden name was Susan Clark. Her parents came to America in 1852 and soon afterwards settled near St. Charles, Illinois. She was united in marriage in 1870 with Albert Haviland and shortly after their marriage they came to LeMars and settled on a farm north of Seney, where they lived until 1894, when they moved into the village of Seney. Mr. Haviland died in 1915. Two children were born to them, Oscar and Edith, Mrs. John Osborne, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Haviland leaves four grandchildren, Mrs. May (sic--Mae) Britton, Mrs. Josie Kunath, Miss Carol Haviland, of LeMars, and Mrs Ollie Clark, of Sioux City, and four great grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held in the Seney Methodist church at 1:30 Saturday afternoon and interment made in the LeMars city cemetery.

Rev. J. M. Metcalf will conduct the services.

Mrs. Haviland, one of the honored pioneers of the county, was widely known. During her long residence she was active in church work, community affairs and social life and was esteemed in a large circle of acquaintance. She did her part in making the world a better place in which to live.
