Two Kingsley Pioneers have gone
Last Rites Held for Peter Kroger and James Smith Early SettlersLast rites were held in the Congregational church in Kingsley for Peter Kroger, a resident, of northwest Iowa for fifty years. Peter L. Kroger, the son of John and Jonny Kroger, was born in Germany, on the 12th day of February in 1852.
At the age of twenty-four, he exchanged vows of marriage with Marie Gaubesohm. Answering the call of the new world, they sailed to New York in 1882 and settled on a farm in Woodbury County, Iowa, where they labored for twenty-eight years. After the death of his wife, Mr. Kroger came to Plymouth county to make his home with his sons, John and Marcus.
For the last year, his health had been failing, and he was taken sick on Sunday, October 18. He rallied for a few days but succumbed to his infirmities at 7 o'clock on Saturday evening, October 24, having reached the age of 79 years, 8 months and 12 days.
To mourn his loss he leaves two brothers, John H. Kroger, of Moville, Iowa, and Androw Kroger, of Colo.; two sons, John and Marcus of Kingsley; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Hansmann, of Vesta, Minn.; Mrs. Minnie Bock, of Hinton; and Mrs. Jenny Stephenson, of Kingsley; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
