Elaine Doris (Dawson) Fokken, 86, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Prime Assisted Living in Le Mars.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at Christ Lutheran Church, Remsen, Iowa, with Pastor Dennis Martens officiating. Burial will follow in the Remsen Community Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Elaine was born March 31, 1931, on a farm in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Emma (Hansen) Dawson. Elaine was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church, Remsen, Iowa. She graduated from Remsen High School. She received her degree in cosmetology from the Sioux City School of Cosmetology in 1954.
She married Harmon Chris Fokken at Christ Lutheran Church, Remsen, Iowa, on August 6, 1954. The couple farmed for 12 years at Hartley and Sutherland and moved to Remsen in 1966 where they operated Harmon’s Variety Store for nine years. Elaine worked at the J.C. Penney Store in Le Mars until they closed and then worked at the Hy-Vee Food Store in Le Mars.
After Harmon passed away in 2005, she remained in her home until February of 2012 when she became a resident at Prime Assisted Living in Le Mars.
She is survived by two sons and their wives: David and Gayle Fokken of Humboldt, Iowa, and Joel and Lori Fokken of South Sioux City, Nebraska; three granddaughters: Ragena (Joel) Shafer, Jessica (Joshua Cross) Fokken and Jamie (Shawn) Urban; great-grandchildren: Creighton, Malia and Weslyn Urban, Callum Fokken Cross, Gage Frock, and Jessa Shafer; seven step-grandchildren: Kristen Hanna, William (Raphaela) Meyers, Barbara (Sean) Angstrom, Mitchell Nasers, Marshall Nasers, Micheal Nasers, and Matthew Nasers; step great grandchildren: Caddie Christensen, Pyper Hanna, Wyatt & Liara Angstrom; brother: Harold Dawson, of Pennsylvania; Sister-in-law, Donna Dawson of Paullina, Iowa; Nieces: Diana Acker and Kim Dooley; and Nephew: Kevin Dawson.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; a brother, Donald Dawson; sister-in-law, Helen Dawson; daughter-in-law, Lisa Fokken.
