Barbara Dewey, 72, of Westfield, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly Monday, November 10, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident near Sioux City.
Arrangements are pending with the Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa.
Barbara Lee Fickes was born July 3, 1942, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Charles E. and Florence V. (Houston) Fickes.
She attended school in Altoona and later graduated from high school in Columbus, Georgia. Following high school, she attended Pikes Peak Community College in Pikes Peak, Colorado, where she attained her L.P.N. certificate. Barb worked as an L.P.N. in Fort Carson, Colorado.
She married David Williams in May 1961. She and David lived in communities in the United States while he was serving in the military. Following his discharge, they settled in Sioux City in 1980. Barb returned to college and received her R.N. certificate from St. Joseph’s Nursing School in Sioux City. She worked at Unity Point Health – St. Luke’s in Sioux City as an R.N. She and David later divorced.
She was united in marriage to Harlan Dewey on April 28, 2001. They made their home south of Westfield. Barb continued working at St. Luke’s until retiring December 31, 2007.
Barb had a strong faith in God and was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Akron. She loved volunteering with youth education at the church. Through the years she loved square dancing, gardening, crocheting, feeding and watching birds, and her dogs. She also was a election-day volunteer in Plymouth County.
Survivors include her husband, Harlan of Westfield; a son, Steven (Leslie) Williams of Highland Ranch, CO, and their children Faith, Sarah, and Alyx; a daughter, Sheryl Douglas of Chapmansboro, TN, and her children Orion, Justin, and Houston; a daughter, Tammy Sue Rollins of Sergeant Bluff, IA, and her children Alexander, Allison, Kelsey, and Jacob; a daughter, Tina (Jeff) Kanaby of Sergeant Bluff and their children Emma, Kelsey, Christopher, and Brianna; a stepdaughter, Ranae (Danny) Miller of Kingsley, IA, and their children Nicole, Kayla, and Bret; a stepson, Jim (Lisa) Dewey of Sioux Falls, SD, and their children Conner, Ian, Joseph, and Faith; 2 great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathy (Bryan) Lynch of Sloan, IA, and their children Heather, Gabbie, and Ian; a sister, Pam Fickes of Pennsylvania; a sister, Darlene (Mike) McCloskey of Pennsylvania; a brother, Mike (Melissa) Baughman of Denver, CO; a brother, Rich Fickes of Pennsylvania; a brother, Ray (Marsena) Fickes of Pennsylvania; a brother, Rob Fickes of Pennsylvania; a brother, Boyd (Tonya) Fickes of Pennsylvania; a brother, David (Robin) Fickes of Colorado; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends; and all her animals. She will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her father and stepmother, Charles (Peg) Fickes; her mother and stepfather: Florence (Russell) Baughman; two brothers, Ed Fickes and Eugene Fickes; and a grandson, Kyle Badgerow.
