James Driscoll
James Driscoll, 82, of Le Mars died Monday, April 25, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
James Dewey Driscoll was born Nov. 11, 1933 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, to Dewey and Lucille (Zenk) Driscoll. Jim was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1952. During high school Jim was a standout athlete in football, basketball, baseball and track.
As a young man Jim served his country in the United States Army from Dec. 4, 1956 until his honorable discharge on Jan. 27, 1958.
Jim was united in marriage to Bonita "Bonnie" Brinkert on Aug. 16, 1957 at Sanborn.
Jim attended Westmar College in Le Mars and graduated with a degree in teaching. Jim taught history and physical education class and coached in Akron for four years.
In 1964, he went to work for Nels Mortenson Insurance in Le Mars. Jim later purchased the agency and renamed the agency Driscoll Insurance. Jim was active with the agency with Gary Konz and Muriel and Richard Miller until selling the business in 2000.
Jim was an avid supporter of Bulldog athletics.
He was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he had volunteered and served on the church council several times through the years.
He also had a passion for the Plymouth County Historical Museum. He was a past president of the board and was part of the original group who helped move the museum to "Old Central."
Jim and Bonnie had opened the doors of their home to assist several boys during troubled times. Many of these young men still remain close to Jim and Bonnie today.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bonnie of Le Mars; a son, David and Martha Driscoll of Le Mars; a step-grandson, Ricardo E. Rodriguez; a sister-in-law, Maxine (Delbert) Symens of George; an "adopted son," Damian Broderson of Minnesota; and a special niece, Susan (Kenny) Orban of Le Mars and their children, Brian, Eric, Adam and Joel.
He was preceded in death by parents, Dewey and Lucille (Zenk) Driscoll; a sister, Marilyn (Otto) Kliehauer; and a brother-in-law, Jack Tanner.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 2 at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with the Rev. Christian Meier and the Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow officiating. Inurnment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 5 p.m., Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Monday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Urn bearer will be Brian Orban. Honorary pallbearers will be his coffee groups and Roger Athens, Keith Renken, Blaine Boyens, Craig Ankerstjerne, Herman Bremmer and Doug McDougall.
