Obituary for Ronald Mahlke Sr.

Ronald L. Mahlke Sr., 72, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 6, 2014. Funeral services will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2014 at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Janis Christensen of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ will officiate. Private family interment will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors conducted by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2014 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 p.m.

Ronald Lee Mahlke Sr. was born on August 21, 1941 in Sioux City, Iowa, to John and Alma (Martfeld) Mahlke. He attended school in Sioux City and later graduated from Le Mars Community High School. Following high school he proudly served in the United States Army and earned his Honorable Discharge on October 31, 1969.

Ron moved to California where he worked as an auto mechanic. In California he met Carole Brown. They moved to Le Mars in 1973 where he owned and operated his own carpet installation business. He eventually took a position with Harker’s Meats in the sanitation department. When Harker’s sold, Ron moved to the sanitation department at Well’s Dairy. Ron and Carole were married on June 6, 1988 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ron was a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling and fishing with his family. The family will always remember the camping trips and water fights with their parents. In his spare time, Ron liked working on cars and taking trips to the casino with his wife Carole.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Tina Langel of Le Mars, IA, and her children, Nichole (Travis) Thoms, Tiffany (Troy) Van Voorst; a daughter, Bonnie and Bill Caravan of Le Mars, IA, and their children, Trudy Wetrosky, T.J.(Carly) Caravan; a daughter, Carole Arens and boyfriend Josh Boughton of Kingsley, IA, and her children, Terra (A.J.) Nelson, Trevor Juzek (fiancé Jaclyn Moring), Trenton and Brenden Arens; a son, Ronald Jr. and Stacey Mahlke of Le Mars, IA, and their children, Faustin, Rio and Sydney ; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen and Ross Thompson of Tucson, AZ; nieces Susan (Donato) Valdiria of Tucson, AZ; Myra (Oliver) of Lexington, MA; Katie (Rick) Prouty of Le Mars, IA; Kristi (Vaughn) Bagstad of Le Mars, IA; nephews Dave Urban of Le Mars, IA, Ken (Linda) Urban of Struble, IA, and Dan Urban of Le Mars, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carole on December 3, 2013; son-in-law, Ted Langel on January 22, 2014; a brother, John and Betty Urban; a sister-in-law, Nancy Storey; and a brother-in-law, Frank Brown Jr.
