Margaret Posthuma, 103, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting Margaret’s family with funeral arrangements.
Margaret Posthuma was born on March 31, 1913 in Alvord, Iowa the oldest of four children born to Koert and Alice (Wynia) Landman. She graduated from Rock Valley High School and took Normal Training that allowed her to teach in country schools. After high school, Margaret taught country school in Plymouth County for several years.
On October 2, 1935, Margaret and Ralph Posthuma were united in marriage at Hospers, Iowa. Together Margaret and Ralph owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Le Mars from 1935 to 1975. Margaret was always in charge of the Toy Department in the basement.
Margaret was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She taught Sunday School for many years and helped in the nursery. Margaret was also a 50 year member of the Federated Women’s Club. In her retirement years, she enjoyed embroidery and made numerous dish towels for the Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary. She was also an avid reader and liked to watch basketball on television.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sons and their wives, Harold and Pat Posthuma of Vancouver, WA and Kerwin and Doris Posthuma of Tonka Bay, MN; a daughter, Rachel Eklund of Shoreview, MN; grandchildren, Scott, Cindy, Todd, Joel, Eric, Jody, Peter; 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph on August 3, 1992; a son, Merlyn; son-in-law, Jerry Eklund and her siblings, Pierre, Alyda and Richard.
