LE MARS, Iowa -- Viola Berding, 95, of Le Mars, formerly of Remsen, Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Matthew Hewitt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery at Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home and Monument in Remsen. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. Monday until service time at the church in Le Mars.
Viola was born June 14, 1914, in Quimby, Iowa, to Adolph and Kate (Rochau) Groepper. At an early age, Viola moved with her family to the Remsen area where she received her education in the rural school system.
On Feb. 22, 1933, she married Clarence Berding at Remsen. They made their home near Remsen where Clarence farmed with his father. In 1935 they went into farming for themselves until 1957. They then moved to Cleghorn, Iowa, where they went into partnership in a service station until 1959 and then moved to Hospers, Iowa, where they operated the Corner Tavern until 1967. They then moved to Le Mars where she was employed at Marie's Dress Shop, Harrison's and then Pamida until she retired in the early 1980s. Clarence died May 16, 1990.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.
Survivors include a daughter, Delores and her husband, Alvin Full of Alton, Iowa; a son, Arvin and his wife, Patti Berding of Slayton, Minn.; and a daughter, Mary Ann Hirschman and Maylon Chartier of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Vera Gano of Cherokee, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Loren and his wife, Verna Groepper of Kingsley, Iowa; and two sisters, Edna Dunne of Kingsley, and Alice Shanahan of Dakota City.
She was preceded in death by a son, Harold; a great-grandson, Paul Arvin Berding; six brothers, Ernest, Harry, Walter, Clarence, Alvin and Kenneth Groepper; and two sisters, Mabel Groepper and Lil Nestor.
Pallbearers will be Alan and Richard Berding, Dan, Jerry, Steve and Tony Full, Michael Hirschman. Honorary pallbearers will be David and Mark Berding and Cory Gano.
