Martin Gibbons, a pioneer and a well-known resident of Akron and vicinity, passed away Friday, April 7, 1922, at 11 a.m., the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. W. Redmond, in this city, after an illness of about four weeks, of complications incidents to advanced age, and a partial stroke of paralysis about two weeks before probably hastened the end. He attained the ripe age of 84 years, 4 months and 28 days.

Martin Gibbons was born in Ireland, November 9, 1837, and when a boy came to the United States with his parents. They settled at Apple River, Ill., where he grew to manhood, and on April 10, 1875, was united in marriage with Mary Jane Clark. Soon afterward they came to Plymouth County, Iowa, locating on a homestead in the Perry Creek Valley, in Liberty Township. They returned to Illinois a couple of years later, but in a short time came back to Plymouth County, residing on a farm northeast of Akron for number of years.

After the death of his wife about seven years ago, Mr. Gibbons came to Akron and has since made a hoe with his eldest daughter, Mrs. M. W. Redmond. Mr. and Mrs. Gibbons were the parents of four children, Patrick Gibbons, Mrs. M. W. Redmond, Lawrence Gibbons and Mrs. Chas. Burnight, all of whom are residents of Akron. Mr. Gibbons is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Folan, of Perry, Okla., and Mrs. Mary O’Dea, of Sioux City, and one brother James Gibbons, of Chicago. The relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.

Mr. Gibbons was an honorable, upright, industrious citizen, a kind husband and father, ad a loyal and helpful neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were conducted by Father E. F. Casey in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Monday, at 10 a.m., and many old-time friends were in attendance. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery.

Relatives and friends coming from a distance to attend the funeral were; James ODea and Mr. and Mrs. John Clark, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Muth and son, Joe, and Mrs. Mary McManaman, of Hawarden; James Redmond, of Le Mars, and James Gale and John and Jake Gehugen, of Beresford.
