In the death of Mrs. Wilhelmina Jans at her home in this city last Friday, April 21, 1922, at 7:40 a. m., another old time resident of Akron vicinity has been called to her reward, at the ripe age of 81 years, 4 months and 9 days. She had been in failing health for several years, but her final illness began on April 8th from asthma and complications incident to advanced age. The loving care of children and grandchildren was tendered to make as comfortable as possible her last days.

Wilhelmina Jans (nee Albert) was born December 12, 1840, at Hanover, Germany, where she was baptized confirmed in the Lutheran church. As a young woman she came to the United States with her parents, settling at Elmhurst, Illinois. There she was united in marriage with Peter Jans on May 1, 1860, and fourteen children, eight sons and six daughters, came to bless this union.

Mr. Jans saw active service with the northern forces in the Civil War and fought for the preservation of his country’s rights and liberties until peace was declared. Upon returning to his home in Illinois he moved with his family tow Lowden, Ia., and three years later they came west to Plymouth County, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Akron until 1899 and then came to Akron to reside, this being the family home ever since. Mr. Jans died here eighteen years ago.

Mrs. Jans was a kind and faithful wife and the devoted mother of a large family of children. She was a true and helpful friend and neighbor and her life was full of good deeds.

She is survived and mourned by six sons and two daughters—Martes H., of Carter, S. D.; Fred, of Appleton, Minn.; Charles, of Westfield Township; Frank, of Mottly, Minn.; Mrs. Paul Utesch, Le Mars, Iowa; Gus., of Le Mars; Mrs. Charles Utesch, southeast of Akron, and Ed., of Akron; also, a brother, Gustav Albert, of Tipton, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Louisa Peters; of Clarence, Iowa both of who came to the funeral, and a brother at Loveland, Colo.; also forty-three grandchildren and thirty-three great-grandchildren.
