Lifelong Plymouth County resident dies at 97

Johanna M. Schultz, 97, lifelong Plymouth County resident, died Thursday, June 15, 1995, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Johanna Marie Hacker was born Dec. 11, 1897, in LeMars, the daughter of Thomas and Bertha (Wolfe) Hacker. She was the first person to be baptized at the newly organized St. John's American Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Her parents were charter, members when the church was organized in 1897. She was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars High School in 1915. She received her teachers training from Western Union College (Westmar University), and taught country school near Seney. On March 22, 1917, she married John A. Schultz at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The couple farmed from 1917 to l931 and later moved to LeMars in 1932. She worked for Aalf Manufacturing for over 20 years. She also worked as the director for the Plymouth County Museum from 1965 to 1983. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she had been an organist for 37 years. She had been a member of BPW Club, Sunshine Club, Mother's Club and circle group at St. John's. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels when she was in her 90s and remained active until entering Brentwood, in October 1994.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Karl and Ruth Schultz of Sioux City and Richard and Jane Schultz of LeMars; four grandchildren, John Schultz and his wife, Sheri of Lawton, David Schultz of Annapolis, Md; Paula Schultz of Indianola, and Alan Schultz and his wife. Shelly of Johnston; four great­grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John A. in 1957, one brother and two sisters.

Services were 10, a.m. today (Monday) at St, John's Lutheran ELCA, with Rev. Gary Landness officiating.

Burial was in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday from 2 to 5 pm with a prayer service at 4 pm at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.
