January 8, 1940JOHN P. GENGLER, REMSEN, CALLED
Funeral Services For Well Known Resident Held FridayAfter continuous residence in the Remsen community for 62 years, during which he held the highest respect of hundreds of good old friends, John Peter Gengler passed away Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Hospital, at the age of 80 years. Infirmities couple with heart trouble caused his death. Of the immediate family, he is survived by one brother.
Born November 30, 1859, in Welscheld, Canton Diekrich, Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, John Peter was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gengler, parents of a family of seven. He was but a boy when the family came to the United States and settled in the town of Bridewood, Ill., where the grown children and father found work, two of the sons working in the coal mines. The family came to Remsen in 1877 and settled on the farm now occupied by the Michael W. Gengler family, five miles southwest of town, where John Peter spent the last 28 years of his life.
John Peter Gengler never married. He lived with his parents until they passed away—the mother 52 years ago and the father, 46 years ago—and after their departure, he continued to make his home among his brothers and other close relatives, always in that vicinity. The past 28 years were spent with his nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Michael W. Gengler, on the old home place.
Six brothers and sisters preceded Mr. Gengler to the grave as did his parents, and the only remaining member of the family is a brother, John Gengler, living in Oyens.
Funeral services were held at nine o’clock Friday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic church in Remsen, of which the deceased was one of the first members. Interment was made in St. Mary’s cemetery there.
