Emma Popken

Emma Popken, 95, of Luverne, Minn., a former Plymouth county resident, died Friday, June 18, 1993, at the Luverne hospital. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran church in Luverne. The Rev. Chris Hinkle officiated. Burial followed at 2 p.m. in the St. John Lutheran church cemetery in Craig, under direction of the Engebretson Funeral Home in Luverne.

Mrs. Popken, the former Emma Marie Charlotte Marienau, was born Jan. 26, 1898, in Plymouth county, Iowa, daughter of John and Anna Osterbuhr Marienau. She married Otto Popken Dec. 13,1916, in Clay County, Iowa. They farmed near Akron from 1919 to 1933, hen moved to a farm near Craig. They moved to a farm near Luverne in 1950, and retired into town in 1968; Mr. Popken died in 1970.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran church, where she was active in the women's society and quilting. She continued to garden, crochet, work crossword puzzles and babysit her young grandchildren, and great-grandchildren until a few weeks before her death.

Survivors include two sons, Darrell of Luverne, Minn., and Kenneth and his wife, Vivian of Pea Ridge, Ark.; two daughters and their husbands, Luella and Kenyon Karr of Ireton and Sandra and Gerald Winter of Luverne; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, two sisters, three brothers and a daughter-in-law.
