Remsen Bell: As John W. Hawkins left his farm home January 3, for a business trip to Remsen, his little three year old son called from the door. “Pa, bring me a pair of over-shoes.” John promised his darling the shoes and he kept his promise, but the poor bright little fellow was never to enjoy the present. On his return home the father found his son unwell, and before medical aid could be summoned, the little fellow’s spirit had fled to angels’ home. Membraneous croup in its severest form had taken the darling from his loving parents, who have the fullest sympathy of all in this their sad affliction. – Le Mars Sun, January 16, 1890, page 8, column 1
