He was the oldest of seven children and grew up helping on the family wheat and cattle farm. He attended rural schools and participated in baseball and basketball. He graduated from Carrier High School, Carrier, OK at the age of 17 and enlisted in the armed services.

Julian was a WW II US Navy veteran serving in combat in the Pacific Theater on the Battleship USS New Jersey. At the time of Japan’s surrender he was preparing for the invasion of Japan as a crewman on an amphibious assault landing craft. After the end of the war, he served on various ships, rising to the rank of petty officer 2nd class.

It was in Sheldon, where he met and married Audrey Mae Lamfers on September 19th, 1954 at the Sheldon United Methodist Church. In 1959, Julian decided to start his own business and he purchased an egg and creamery wholesale operation in Le Mars which he named Hart Produce. He later added animal feed and feed supplement lines. He operated that business until his retirement in 1997.

Julian was a hard working individual who in his spare time enjoyed camping and fishing with his family. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars where he sang in the choir and was involved in church leadership. Education was very important to Julian and he was grateful that he was able to put all four of his children through college.
