Robert L. Phillips, 89, of Augusta, Wis., died early Saturday morning, Feb. 21, 2015, at the Augusta Area Nursing Home and under the care of Mayo Hospice.
Robert Louis Philips, son of Elmer and Martha (Gabel) Philips, was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Akron. He was raised on a farm outside of Akron and graduated from Le Mars High School. After his graduation, Bob enlisted in the United States Army, serving during World War II, where he was stationed on the Aleutian Islands, in Alaska. Following his honorable discharge, Bob was united in marriage to Betty Buryanek on April 8, 1950.
Bob and Betty farmed for a short time in Iowa, before moving to Augusta in the early 1960s. While in Augusta, Bob was employed for Lampert Yards until his retirement in 1990.
Giving of himself to his community, whether it was through his involvement in community organizations, his church, or with fellow citizens, is what defined Bob. He was always willing to help anyone in need; from giving people rides to church, helping with construction projects, to giving his grandkids help on school projects.
He was actively involved in many facets of the Augusta community through his membership with the Augusta United Methodist Church, the Augusta Lions Club and Augusta American Legion Post # 291.
Bob also spent many enjoyable years mentoring to the youth of Augusta, through his participation with the Boy Scouts of America.
Supporting the Augusta community was extremely important to Bob, and you will never find anyone more willing to help. Bob's true passions were spending time with family, fishing, hunting, being an avid sports fan and helping out where ever he could.
Bob will be dearly missed by Betty, his wife of 64 years; his four children, Jim Philips, of Utica, Ky., Barb (Rick) Echter, of Sibley, Todd (Susan) Philips, of St. Paul, Minn., and Sharon (Greg) Zimmerman, of Augusta. Wis.; two sisters, Cleone Brown, of Le Mars, and Lennace (Carlyle) Brandt, of Spirit Lake; six grandchildren, Brad (Becky) Echter, Eric (Kelli) Echter, Ryan (Val) Echter, Renae (Brady Shaffer) Zimmerman, David Zimmerman, Troy Zimmerman; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Fran Philips; mother-in-law and father-in-law.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, in Augusta, with Pastor Lon Jury officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by Augusta area veterans will be held in the West Lawn Cemetery, in Augusta. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
