Le Mars, Iowa - Eva I. Varenhorst, 89, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Friday, December 9, 2011 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev Gary Landsness and Pastor Marcia Young will officiate. Burial will follow at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Craig, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 12, 2011 at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church on Monday prior to the funeral.
Eva Irene Varenhorst was born on May 13, 1922 on her families' farm west of Le Mars, Iowa, one of eleven children born to Harvey and Mabel (Gabel) Herman. She attended country school near her home in rural Merrill, Iowa.
On February 22, 1949 Eva and Harry Varenhorst were united in marriage at the Herman home. The couple made their home on a farm west of Le Mars. It was there that Eva and Harry farmed together and raised their four children. Upon retirement, they moved to Le Mars. Harry passed away January 15, 1991.
Eva is currently a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. While living on the farm she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Merrill, Iowa where she taught Sunday school and participated in American Lutheran Church Women (ALCW). She was also a member of the Country Gardener's Club and the Caregiver Review Committee at Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars. She loved flowers and gardening, especially African Violets, and taking pictures.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Gene Varenhorst and his wife Kathi of Woodstock, GA, Joan Ernst and her husband Dennis of Le Mars, IA, and Mary Lenz of Le Mars, IA; six grandchildren, Justin Boyd and Tiffany Gunter of Woodstock, GA, Dena (Bill) Fender of Dallas, TX, Kimberly (John) Wilson of Sioux City, IA, Christa Lenz and John Lenz both of Le Mars, Iowa; five great-grandchildren Chad Gunter and Addison Drew Boyd of Woodstock, GA, Michaela Fender and Abigail Fender of Dallas, TX, Sophie Wilson of Sioux City, IA; four sisters Marjorie (Virgil) Willer of Akron, IA, Delores Bohlken of Le Mars, IA, Shirley (Verlyn) Baker of Pickstown, SD and Gladys Mroczkowski of Le Mars, IA; two brothers, Milford (Sharon) Herman of Grand Terrace, CA and Donald (Gloria) Herman of Urbandale, IA; sisters-in-law Katherine "Sis" Varenhorst, Lois Varenhorst, Estella Herman and Nancy Herman all of Le Mars, IA; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry; son, Virgil on June 18, 2003; five brothers Milton, Gerald, Willard, Duane and Leland in infancy; In-laws Elizabeth Herman, Robert Mroczkowski, Bill and Helen Varenhorst, Ervin and Myrna Varenhorst, Fritz Varenhorst, Elmer and Cleone Varenhorst, Bob and Beverly Jurgenson and Norman Varenhorst.Copyright © 2011 Le Mars Daily Sentinel (Le Mars, Plymouth County, Iowa) of 10 December 2011.
