John Barthole was born in Bissen, Grand Duchy of Luxemurg, on the 12th day of July, 1839. He came to this country in 1865 and resided for three years in La Salle county, Illinois. He then returned to Bissen, but came back a year later and made his home in Peroria, Ill., where he married Jein Moegenburg, who survives him.
In 1881 the couple came to Plymouth county and in company with his brother, Charles, took a farm five miles south of Remsen. After eighteen years of busy work on the farm the family moved to Remsen to rest on the fruit of their toiling.
Mr. and Mrs. John Barthole had no children.
John Barthole died the death of a good man, faithful catholic, after three years of lingering illness, on the 31st day of August. Peace to his ashes.
