Leo J. Freking

Leo Freking, 86, of Le Mars, died Wednesday Sept. 21, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Leo Joseph Freking was born March 31, 1919, on the family farm south of Le Mars, the son of Casper and Anna (Deters) Freking. Leo grew up south of Le Mars and attended rural school in Stanton Township and St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars. He then became engaged in farming with his brother on the family farm.

From 1942 to 1946, he served with the U.S. Army and spent the last two of those years in the South Pacific stationed of Saipan. When he returned home, Leo continued farming with his brother for a couple of years.

Leo J. Freking married Therese marie Heuertz at St. Mary's CAtholic Church in Remsen on Aug. 24, 1948. The couple farmed most of their married lives until they retired in 1997 and moved into Le Mars.

Leo was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le mars, where he had been alongtime usher and a frequent leader of rosaries. He was also a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council 1466, and a member of the American Legion, Wasmer Post 241 and a member of their World War II Last Man's Club.

Church and family were most important to Leo, but he also enjoyed bowling and participated in league bowling for many years. He also enjoyed pitching horseshoes and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Therese; five children, AQnn Wente and her husband, Robert of Springfield, Mo., Connie Christensen and her husband, Steve of GRanville, Patricia Freking of Le Mars, Paul Freking and his wife, Sharon of Le Mars, and Chryl Lorenzen and her husband, DAvid of Oelwein; 12 grandchildren, Mike, Scott, and Jennifer Wente, Shelly and Shannon Christensen, Katie Preston, and Abby Freking, and Austin Lorenzen and his wife, Megan, Brandi Moss and her husband, Adam, Traci Lorenzen, and Tyler Lorenzen; and a brother Gregg Freking of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; John, Noe, and Ben Freking; and four sisters: Caroline Freking, Mary Haverkamp, Agnes Waldschmitt, and Frances Bohnenkamp.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Wasmer Post 241 of the American Legion. Visitation at the Feuerstein Funeral Home will be after 2 p.m. today (Thursday), with a rosary at 4 p.m., the Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m.

Leo's grandchildren will be pallbearers.
