Nancy Frerichs Killed

Nancy Frerichs, 17 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Frerichs who reside at 215 3rd Ave. SE, in Le Mars was killed instantly in a one car accident on Highway 75, 4 miles south of Merrill at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Cornorer S. H. Luken said death was caused by a fractured skull.

In critical condition at Sacred Heart Hospital is her sister, Lorna, 18, who underwent surgery for severe cuts on Sunday morning. She was rushed to the hospital following the accident by Luken's ambulance. Although she is in a state of shock, she showed improvement Saturday evening. She received servere cuts about the face and head and on her legs.

It is thought Lorna was the driver of the 1956 Ford owned by her fiance, Lowell Hagar. The car went out of control and struck a bridge abutment. The car was towed to Stoos Brothers yard and is a total loss, the motor being driven into the front seat and the left front wheel into the back seat.

The recently installed inhalator to administer oxygen in Luken's ambulance was used to revive Lorna on the way to the hospital.

Investigating the accident was the sherrif's office and highway Patrolman, Dick Lutjena. a passing trucker was the first at the scene and reportedly loosed the front seat in order to remove the victims from the back seat where they had been thrown by the impact. Authorities said the car had pulled to the left for some unknown reason and it was not known whether or not the driver pulled to the left to pass another car or truck. No other vehicle was involved in the accident. The officers said there were no skid marks to indicate that a tire had blown out. The girls had left Le Mars after lunch and were on their way to Sioux City.

A rumor was spread that a large paper carton had fallen from a vehicle in front of them and they swerved to miss it. This, however, was not in an official report.

Nancy Carol was born August 20, 1942. Besides her parents and sister, Lorna, she is also survived by a younger brother, Jimmy. Mrs. Frerichs is a school teacher and Mr. Frerichs is employed by Wiltgen Ready-Mix.

Nancy who was a 1959 graduate of Le Mars High school, was employed at the Le Mars Mutual Insurance Company. She was the fiancee of William Reuter. Lorna is employed at Kohout Cap Factory.

Nancy was born in Sioux City. She lived there as an infant and most of her life at Hawarden and vicinity. The family moved to Le Mars in 1957.
