Helen Dean Nichol
Helen Dean Nichol, 98, a Le Mars native, died Feb. 27, 1991, at Good Samaritan nursing home in Boulder, Colo.
After cremation, a private memorial service was held in Boulder.
The former Helen Dean was born Dec. 18, 1892, in Le Mars to Frank and Emma Stephen Dean. She had a brother, Howard, and a sister, Ruth Robertson, both of whom have predeceased her.
Helen attended Morningside College in Sioux City and then taught country school. She married Frederick Nichol, a lawyer, who later became an ordained Presbyterian minister. He held several pastorates in Iowa.
The couple adopted a daughter, Margaret, Nov. 20, 1920, and a year later on Nov. 21, a son, Frederick Dean, was born to them.
Rev. Nichol had additional pastorates in Colorado. He was killed in a car accident in 1945 while serving as pastor at Yuma, Colo. He is buried in Le Mars Memorial cemetery.
Mrs. Nichol accepted the position as housemother at the University of Colorado in Boulder. She then became social director at the girls dormitory until the age of 69, when she accepted the position as housemother at the Presbyterian supported Navaho Indian school in Ganado, Ariz. She retired at age 72.
Survivors are her son, Frederick, who lives in Scottsdale, Ariz. and at Ouray, Colo., and three grandchildren.
Relatives in this area are a nephew, Calvin Robertson, Mrs. Donald Lucken who is a niece and Mrs. Jay Robertson, all of Akron, and Marjorie Robertson, a niece who lives in San Francisco.
Relatives from Le Mars are Mrs. Edna Kehrberg and Mrs. Hilda Jans; also Pearl Manz of Sioux City.
