PIONEER AKRON WOMAN IS CALLED TO FINAL REWARD

LAST Rites Are Held Tuesday Morning for Mrs. Ellen Ross

Mrs. Ellen Ross, one of the early pioneer residents of this community, passed away Sunday morning, December 8, 1935, at 5:30 o'clock, at the home of her son, George Ross, aged 87 years, 8 months and 6 days. She had been in failing health for some time due to the infirmities of advanced age.

Ellen Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Smith, was born April 2, 1848, at Sabula, Iowa, where she grew to young womanhood. She was married to James Ross on January 2, 1871, at Sabula, and soon after they came west and located at Elk Point, S. D., (then Dakota Territory). A few years later they came to Akron and this has since remained the family home. Mr. and Mrs. Ross farmed about two miles northeast of town for many years, later retiring and moving to town. They were the parents of four daughters and five sons, all of whom survive except one son, Charles, who passed away in 1919. Her husband preceded her in death on January 23, 1935.

The children left to mourn her departure are: Mrs. Etta Klauer, Mrs. E. P. Klauer, Mrs. F. Smythe, of Akron; J. B. Ross and Mrs. Frank Lovell, of Rapid City, S. D.; W. B., George and Clyde, of Akron. Out of a family of eight, there is only one sister surviving, Mrs. Julia Conly, of Long Beach, Calif.

During the active years of her life Mrs. Ross was devoted to her family, and was a helpful, valued neighbor and friend, ever ready with a cheerful word and a kind deed. The community in which she resided so many years extends its sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock in St. Patrick's Catholic church, Rev. Fr. J. A. Roder officiating. There was a large attendance of friends at the services to pay a final tribute of respect. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery.

Those who came from out of town were: Mrs. frank Lovell, of Rapid City, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Donely, of Scotland, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mather's and son, of Wynot, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Gill, of Elk Point, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Nystrom, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peterson, of Alcester, S. D.
