Berniece Girard, 95, of Sioux City, Iowa formerly of Akron, Iowa passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 at Bickford Memory Care in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 25, 2013 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Akron. Reverend Doug Klein and Deacon Richard Port will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 24, 2013 with the family present after 6:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Parish Rosary, all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Berniece Marie Ross was born May 26, 1918 in Miller, South Dakota, the daughter of George and Margaret (Burns) Ross. In the 1930’s, she moved with her family to Akron. She attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1935.

Early on, she worked as a nanny for families in the Akron area.

She was united in marriage to Virgil Harris on May 12, 1940 in Akron. They farmed north of Akron. Berniece was a homemaker for her family. In 1968, they moved into Akron. Virgil passed away October 22, 1975.

Later, while at a dance in Sioux City, she met Isadore Girard. They were married in November of 1983. They made their home in Akron. In 2007, she moved to Alcester Manor in Alcester, South Dakota and in October of 2008, she became a resident of Bickford Memory Care in Sioux City. Isadore passed away in March of 2012.

Berniece was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, having been active through the years in various church activities. Berniece loved to dance and spend time with family and friends. She will be remembered for her care and compassion that she gave to her siblings and husband. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her children: Margaret Ann Harris of Omaha, NE, Kathleen Harris of Minnetonka, MN, and Greg Harris of St. Paul, MN; her step children: Sharon Doty of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary (Paul) Mosher of Sioux City, IA, Donald (Nelia) Girard of Las Vegas, NV, Jerry (Terri) Girard of Minneapolis, MN, Deb (Dan) Britt of Le Mars, IA, and Vicki (Kevin) Kollbaum of Sioux City, IA; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 19 step grandchildren; 49 step great grandchildren; and 8 step great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: George and Margaret Ross; her siblings: Vera Ross, Naomi Garner, Vern Ross, and Blaine Ross.
