Margaret Hammerly, 82, of Newton died Monday, April 30, 2007, at Park Centre in Newton.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton with Pastor Michael Dack officiating.

The family will greet friends at the church following the service. Memorials to the Congregational United Church of Christ, Hospice of Jasper County, Jasper County Historical Museum or to the Wittemberg Cemetery Association may be left at the church on the afternoon of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

The daughter of Dr. Walter J. and Edith E. (Gillin) Brunner, she was born Nov. 26, 1924, in Omaha, Neb. Margaret received her bachelor of science degree in child development from Iowa State University in Ames.

Margaret married Raymond S. Hammerly on Aug. 10, 1948, in Akron. She was a homemaker. She had also been a preschool teacher for two years, had worked at Blank Children’s Hospital for a year and had also worked at ISU Pammel Court Preschool in Ames for a year.

Margaret was a 58-year member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton, was actively involved as the Pilgrim Fellowship Youth Advisor and Music Ministries and was a longtime member and past officer of PEO. Margaret received her 20-year pin for her work as a 4-H leader and participation with Jasper County 4-H Committee. She also was a member of the Mother’s Club and Wittemberg Grange.

She loved all children and volunteered at Berg Elementary, listening to first graders read. Margaret loved and enjoyed being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond of Newton; two sons, Scott (Tami) Hammerly of Ankeny and Galen (Kathryn) Hammerly of Newton; daughter, Carol (Billy) Harriman of Story City; her nine grandchildren, Jason (Julie) Hammerly, Brooke Hammerly, Brandi (Dean) Hammond, Jake (Melissa) Hammerly, Ike (Liz) Hammerly, Clarissa (Tim) Bloom, John Hammerly, Sarah Harriman and Ben Harriman; and her four great-grandchildren, Nick Hammond, Alexis Hammerly, Josh Hammerly and Kaitlyn Bloom.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents.
